At Detroit, the Magnum was displayed in SRT8 trim, the better to show off the hood scoop that now is part of the SRT8 package. The car also wore a new paint color for the SRT8, a bright lipstick red, though we doubt Dodge will call it that.

Although it will reach European dealerships by September, don’t expect the 5 Series Touring to be available in the U.S. anytime soon. So far, the 5 wagon is not part of the automaker’s North American product plans and given America’s less than fond feelings for true wagons, we expect it to stay that way.

For the first time, Porsche’s engineers have removed a large quantity of plastic camouflage and cladding to reveal some of the body work lurking underneath. Specifically, an extending rear wing can be seen sprouting from the rear hatch and the sloping roofline and large frontal area are clearly visible.

Starting with the turbocharged in-line six from the S60 T6, Volvo engineers — in partnership with Polestar, a Swedish racing and performance parts company — modified the engine control module to optimize output, adding boost, advancing the spark timing, and recalibrating the throttle to enhance performance. The result is an eight percent increase in horsepower (from 300 to 325 hp) and a nine percent increase in torque (from 325 to 354 lb-ft), making the S60 R-Design the most powerful production Volvo ever built. Volvo engineers also went to work on the chassis to enhance the S60’s ride and handling. Changes include stiffer springs , monotube rear dampers, a front strut brace, and a larger-diameter front antiroll bar.

Ever since the coupe concept broke cover to become the star of last year’s Detroit show, interested observers have been wondering when a convertible would follow. Just as the current-generation spawned a ragtop, it was simply inconceivable that Chevy wouldn’t do thesame for the Camaro, even though the coupe is still a “concept.” The convertible is also a neat way of keeping the Camaro buzz alive in advance of the coupe’s 2009 production debut. The convertible will hit showrooms late in ’09.

For 2012, the Wrangler gets Chrysler’s fully contemporary Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6, a dual-overhead cam unit that features numerous advances in efficiency and noise reduction. Output jumps from 202 hp to 285 hp, and torque advances by about 10 percent, to 260 lb-ft. The 3.8’s best attribute was compactness, thanks to the low-profile overhead-valve layout. Squeezing the tall Pentastar V-6 under the hood was almost like getting Jay Leno jaw-first through the tiny door inside Alice’s Wonderland. Engineering chief Tony Petit lost a lot of sleep before adapting the powerplant with a revised throttle-body; a serpentine belt that would stay clear of water and mud; a high-mounted, rear-facing alternator; and unique exhausts. An acoustic cover helps to suppress noise.
